‘Libraries allow children to ask questions about the world and find the answers. And the wonderful thing is that once a child learns to use a library, the doors to learning are always open’. - Laura Bush

The Journey of a lifetime starts with the reading of books. Knowledge is power and books are the principal source of its attainment. A man is influenced by the books he reads. Likewise, the stature of the school library to a great extent defines how much importance is given to reading. There is an old adage which says ‘A house without books is like a room without windows’, similarly a school without a good library is incomplete.

At IPEM International School, we have one of the largest school libraries, measuring over 1400 square feet. The library has been recently shifted to the third floor, in a newly constructed large hall keeping in mind that one requires peace and tranquility for reading, and hence it has been on purpose been kept away from the hustle and bustle of the class rooms. It is equipped with a large number of books on all subjects as well as educational and course related DVD’s. The recent addition is a large collection of DVD’s of Shakespearian & other prescribed plays and movies based on prescribed short stores. The collection of library books has grown to over 5000 books. In addition to that the school library subscribes to a number of Magazines, periodicals and journals. There is a new section for teachers as well with some of the latest resources available on teaching and learning.

The Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings, Narnia Series, Goosebumps series continue to be the hot favorites among young fiction lovers. Among magazines and periodicals, National Geographic, Geo, Science Reporter, Readers Digest and Sports Star are the most popular. The school library has recently acquired multiple copies of the new plays prescribed at the ICSE and ISC level, including ‘Arms and the Man’ and ‘Merchant of Venice’ so that they are easily available to all students without any waiting time. The school library catalogue is also available online on the school website, so that students can easily browse and search for the books they are interested in borrowing.

The School library functions throughout the year including the summer vacation. Our Principal is always eager to encourage young readers and hence in order for them to utilize their holidays well, he has allowed library access throughout the summer vacations. We have also extended the days a student can keep the books during the summer vacation. Our Principal takes a lot of personal interest in expanding the library and encourages visits to book fairs and also helps us order a number of books online. Recently in collaboration with the online store indiaplaza.in we got a large consignment of books at a huge discount, which enabled us to buy more books within the same budget.

Books are man’s best friend, with this thought in mind we do hope that our students continue to use our excellent library facility and dedicate more and more time to reading books.

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! -- When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.” ― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
