FIELD TRIP (CLASS IX)

On February 9, 2010, the students of Class IX went on a field trip/study tour to the Allahabad Dairy, which is situated about 30 km from the city in the small township of Hanumanganj. The primary objective of this field trip/study tour was to provide the students with the opportunity to collect information for the preparation of their E.V.S., commerce, and economics projects. The students were quite excited at the prospect of being able to acquire in-depth knowledge about an agro-based industrial unit situated in a semi-rural area.

On reaching the dairy, the students were given a tour of various custom-designed machines, such as a steam machine that is used to sterilize milk and clean the machinery; boilers and storage tanks; machines for making cream, butter, and clarified butter; a special machine for making cottage cheese; and a packaging unit. As part of the study tour, the students were shown how milk is tested, filtered, weighed, chilled, pasteurized, skimmed, and pouched in 500 ml plastic packets, with a packing capacity of 100 l/min.

Apart from milk, the students were also shown a newly-developed portable water packaging facility. The plant uses ground water as raw material, which is then filtered and purified through various stages including sand filtration, 0.5 micron filtration, reverse osmosis, 0.1 micron filtration, ozonisation, and ultra violet radiation. It is then sent to the bottling plant. The students were particularly interested in how the plant manufactured its own disposable plastic bottles. It uses preform bottles and blows them up like balloons using compressed air.

Overall, it was a very interesting trip, and the students were able to expand their knowledge and learn quite a bit about milk manufacture and the running of agro-based units. We are indeed grateful to Mr. Tahir Hasan, Vice Chairman, Mr. Yaseer Hasan, Managing Director, and the staff of Allahabad Dairy, who provided our students with the opportunity to visit their factory.
